Hints for Parents

Whiston Willis's hints for parents and families on improving attitudes towards Maths:

  1. Be positive about maths! Try not to say things like “Maths is hard”, "I can't help them as I am rubbish at it" or “I couldn't do maths at school”. Even if it’s true, think about the attitude you want your child to have and how they perceive maths. At Whiston Willis we encourage our children to have a ‘can do’ attitude and build up resilience.
  2. Show children how you use maths everyday and its importance in every day life! Include your child in activities involving maths such as using money, cooking and travelling - We're sure they would love to help with the weekly shopping!
  3. Praise your child for their effort! If children have an attitude of resilience and never giving up even when mistakes are made, this will give them more of a chance of achieving. Attitude is a huge barrier to learning!
