Music at Whiston Willis Primary Academy

Our rationale

At Whiston Willis Primary Academy, We aim to provide a stimulating and enriching music curriculum to develop and extend understanding, skills and enjoyment of music through creating, playing, performing and listening to a wide variety of musical forms and styles. We teach music to all children, whatever their ability, in accordance with the school curriculum policy of providing a broad and balanced education to all children. Teachers provide learning opportunities matched to the needs of children with learning difficulties, and our work in music takes into account the targets set for individual children with special needs as necessary. Children are offered the opportunity to study a musical instrument with peripatetic teachers from the Wiltshire Music Services and some private music teachers.

Key Stage 1:

From September 2018, all children in Key Stage 1 will be taught Music using Charanga Music of Work (SOW). The Charanga Musical School Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum.

In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, this Scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective/outcome concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.

Children will be following a teaching cycle attached below.
