Modern Foreign Languages

The person responsible for developing MFL at our school is Mrs K. Fitzgerald.

At Whiston Willis Primary Academy, the learning of a Modern Foreign Language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They have opportunities to grow in linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between French and English. The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.

At Whiston Willis Primary Academy, all Key Stage 2 pupils follow the “Language Angels” online scheme. This is fully compliant with all National Curriculum requirements for Modern Foreign Languages and systematically covers the key language learning skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Grammar. A 2 year topic cycle based on “Language Angels” units is in place which also includes a wide range of interactive games and built-in assessment.

Due to our school numbers and having some mixed-age classes, in year 5 and 6 we run on a two year cycle to enable coverage and progression.
