Intent

At Whiston Willis Primary Academy, we aim to develop creative, confident and reflective artists who are inspired to explore ideas, experiment and express themselves through art.

Our ambitious and inclusive Art & Design curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum and progressively develops pupils' artistic knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Pupils experience a range of media, materials and techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture, while developing their ability to observe, create, evaluate and refine their work.

Through studying a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers , pupils explore different styles, traditions, cultures and perspectives and develop an understanding of how art reflects and shapes the world around us.

Implementation

From Year 1 to Year 6, CUSP provides the core sequencing for our Art & Design curriculum, enabling pupils to progressively develop their knowledge and mastery of artistic techniques. Teachers adapt teaching according to pupils' needs while maintaining ambitious curriculum outcomes for all.

Teaching reflects our whole-school pedagogical approach, informed by Rosenshine's Principle's of Instruction and our six-part strcuture. Retrieval, explicit instruction, modelling, questioning, guided practice and regular checks for understanding support pupils in developing and applying increasingly sophisticated artistic knowledge and techniques.

Pupils are encouraged to explore, experiment, practise, create and evaluate. Sketchbooks provide opportunities to record observations, investigate techniques, develop ideas and reflect upon and refine their work.

Oracy is integral to Art & Design. Pupils develop appropriate artistic vocabulary to discuss creative choices, explain ideas, evaluate their own work and respond thoughtfully to the work of others.

As a Rights Respecting School, we use art to celebrate creativity, identity and diversity. Pupils encounter artists and artistic traditions from different cultures and backgrounds, developing respect for different forms of expression and perspectives.

Curriculum Progression

Our Art & Design curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, progressively developing pupils' artistic knowledge, vocabulary, creativity and proficiency across a range of techniques and media.
